Flame retardant mechanisms for wire and cable materials


1.   Halogenated flame retardants: They release gases that disrupt the combustion   process, cool down the material and prevent further combustion.    

2.   Phosphorus-based flame retardants: They form a protective layer on the   surface of the material, preventing oxygen from reaching the combustible   material and inhibiting the combustion process.    

3.   Intumescent flame retardants: expand at high temperatures to form a   protective carbon layer to avoid further combustion.    

4.   Nanoclay flame retardants: Form a barrier to prevent oxygen and heat from   reaching the combustible material.
