PPAP-15: Enhancing Flame Retardancy in Automotive Interior Components

Background: 

In the automotive industry, safety standards, especially regarding flammability, are extremely stringent. Polypropylene (PP), widely used for interior components, poses a flammability challenge.

Application of PPAP-15: 

An automotive manufacturer used Piperazine pyrophosphate, item No. PPAP-15, as an intumescent flame retardant for PP-based dashboard panels. The additive was integrated to enhance fire resistance while maintaining the material's properties.

Test Data and Results:

Flame Retardancy: With 22% PPAP-15 addition, the PP dashboard panels passed the UL94-V0 (1.6mm) vertical burning test, demonstrating excellent flame retardancy.

Thermal Stability: The treated PP showed stability under a processing temperature of 240℃, crucial for automotive manufacturing processes.

Durability Tests: Panels treated with PPAP-15 successfully passed the 70℃ water immersion test for 168 hours and an 80℃, 80% RH test, indicating good resistance to environmental factors.

Conclusion: 

The integration of PPAP-15 into PP materials significantly improved the flame retardancy of automotive interior components without compromising their physical properties, aligning with the safety and performance standards of the automotive industry.
